How we earn money

InternetGermany.de is a comparison and information site. It is not an internet provider and it does not sell a connection.

Some providers may pay a commission if you continue to their site through an affiliate link. That commission is paid by the provider. It does not change the published prices, contract length or advertised speed, and it does not change the price sort.

Affiliate links are stored separately from the price feed. If a plan has no tracking URL, the button opens the provider’s official page.

congstar Home and Homespot buttons use Awin tracking URLs for the matching tariff. Phone, prepaid and mobile-plan rows from that feed are not used. Other providers still open their official pages until a tracking URL is on file.

Internet Germany compares home internet providers and plans for people who need a residential internet connection in Germany. If you are choosing between DSL, cable, fibre or 5G home internet, this page gives you a practical starting point. You can compare well-known providers, typical published prices, contract lengths and key differences, then check what is actually available at your exact street address.

How home internet works in Germany

Home internet in Germany is usually sold by technology and by address. That means the same provider can offer different plans, speeds and monthly prices depending on the building, street and local network at your home.

For most households, the main choices are DSL, cable, fibre and 5G home internet. Some providers use more than one network type, while others focus on one. When you compare internet providers Germany-wide, always start with the address check rather than assuming one plan is available everywhere.

Why address matters

Your exact street address can affect:

  • which providers you can order from
  • which connection types are offered
  • the advertised maximum speed shown for your home
  • whether flexible or long-term contracts are available

That is why the best internet provider in Germany for one home may not be the best fit for another. A provider that looks strong nationally may simply not offer the same home internet Germany options at your address.

Connection types: fibre, DSL, cable and 5G home internet

The right internet connection in Germany depends on what is installed at your address and what you need at home. Some households prioritise low monthly cost, others want a higher advertised maximum speed, and some need a flexible setup while waiting for a permanent apartment.

Fibre

Fibre is offered by providers such as Telekom, O2, 1&1, congstar and Deutsche Glasfaser. If fibre is available at your address, it is often one of the first options people compare for home internet in Germany. You can read more at fibre internet in Germany.

DSL

DSL remains a common option and is offered by Telekom, Vodafone, O2, 1&1 and congstar. It can be useful where fibre is not available or when you want to compare standard list prices across multiple providers. More details are on DSL internet in Germany.

Cable

Cable plans are shown here from Vodafone and O2. In buildings where cable is available, it can be one of the main alternatives to DSL and fibre. See cable internet in Germany for the basics.

5G home internet

5G home internet appears here with congstar. This can be worth checking if you want a simpler setup or a more flexible option in some cases. See 5G home internet in Germany.

What about satellite?

Satellite exists as an option in some cases, but we do not price satellite plans here. If you need background information, see satellite internet in Germany.

Contract length, flexible internet and no-contract options

Contract length can matter as much as monthly price, especially if you are renting temporarily, waiting for a permanent move or still deciding where to live long term. In this comparison, 9 plans are marked as flexible term plans.

Flexible options can be useful if you want home internet in Germany without committing for too long. They can also help if you need internet quickly while you sort out a permanent fixed-line connection.

What to compare on contract terms

  • whether the plan is flexible term or a longer fixed contract
  • whether the monthly price changes after an introductory period
  • whether an activation charge applies
  • whether the technology fits your current address

If you specifically want a shorter commitment, read internet without contract in Germany. Always check the provider's current contract terms before signing up, because not every plan shown in a broad Germany internet comparison will match your situation.

Availability by address — plans differ by exact street address

Availability is one of the biggest differences between internet service providers in Germany. Even within the same city, one apartment may have fibre and cable choices while another building a few streets away may only have DSL or a smaller set of plans.

That is why this site compares providers and published offers, but does not claim live availability. You should always check the exact street address before treating any internet provider Germany option as orderable.

What can change by address

  • which providers appear at all
  • which technology is offered
  • the advertised maximum download speed
  • whether a provider's cheaper intro offer applies

If you are moving to Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt, city guides can help with the local context, but the final answer still depends on your building. See Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt for city-specific starting points.

Internet for expats and new residents

If you are new to Germany, the internet setup process can feel more complicated than expected. The main issue is usually not comparing brands, but matching a realistic plan to your address, move-in date and how long you plan to stay.

A practical way to start

  1. Check what technologies are available at your address.
  2. Compare monthly prices in the intro period and later period.
  3. Look at activation costs and contract length.
  4. Choose between a fixed-line setup and a more flexible option if you have not moved permanently yet.

For expats, the best internet provider in Germany is often simply the provider with a suitable plan that is actually available at the apartment and fits the length of your stay. If you want a more detailed walkthrough, see internet for expats in Germany and how to get internet in Germany.

If you only need connectivity for a short period, you may also want to compare mobile internet or an internet SIM card while waiting for fixed home internet.

Internet speeds in Germany — compare advertised maxima

When you compare internet plans in Germany, focus on the advertised maximum speed shown for the plan and your address. In this comparison, advertised download maxima range from 16–1000 Mbps.

That does not mean every provider offers every speed everywhere. It also does not mean you should treat one headline number as the only thing that matters. Monthly price, contract term, activation charges and connection type can all be just as important.

How to read speed figures

  • They are advertised maximum download speeds.
  • They can vary by technology and by address.
  • They should be compared alongside price and contract length.

If you want more context, see internet speed in Germany. We do not present a national average here.

How to compare internet plans in Germany

If you want to find the best internet provider in Germany for your household, compare plans in a set order instead of jumping straight to the biggest speed number or lowest intro price. This avoids choosing a plan that looks good in theory but does not fit your address or contract needs.

Step 1: Check the connection type

See whether your home can get fibre, DSL, cable or 5G home internet. You can start from the comparison or use the technology guides.

Step 2: Compare monthly price properly

Look at the introductory monthly price and the later monthly price together. Standard list prices should be read as standard list prices, not as the cheapest available offer.

Step 3: Add setup and activation costs

A lower monthly price can still come with an activation fee. In this comparison, listed activation charges range from €0–€79.99.

Step 4: Check contract flexibility

If you are new to Germany or renting short term, flexible term plans may be worth prioritising over a long contract.

Step 5: Compare providers that actually serve your address

The best provider for your building may be different from the best-known provider overall. Always narrow the comparison to the providers and internet packages in Germany that are available where you live.

A short disclaimer — how to read the numbers

The figures on this page are published plan figures from the providers included here. They are useful for comparison, but they are not a guarantee that a specific plan, price or speed is available at your home.

Read all monthly prices as published prices and compare introductory pricing with later pricing together. Standard list prices are standard list prices, not automatically the lowest available offer. If a value is missing, treat it as not verified and check directly with the provider.

We also do not rank plans by all-in cost alone, because technology, contract length and address availability can change which plan is best for you.

Internet in Germany: common questions

Answers to the broad searches this page is meant to cover. Confirm the live offer at your address.

Who is the best internet provider in Germany?

There is no single best internet provider in Germany for every household. The right choice depends on your exact address, the connection type available there, the published monthly price, activation cost and contract length. On this page, you can compare well-known providers including Telekom, Vodafone, O2, 1&1, congstar, Deutsche Glasfaser and PŸUR, then narrow your shortlist to the plans that fit your home.

What internet packages are available in Germany?

Internet packages in Germany usually fall into four main home categories: fibre, DSL, cable and 5G home internet. Different providers offer different combinations, and the same provider can show different plans at different addresses. This comparison covers 7 providers and 61 plan variants, with published monthly prices shown for both introductory periods and later periods where relevant.

How do I get home internet in Germany?

Start by checking your exact street address, because home internet in Germany is highly address dependent. Then compare the available connection types, the advertised maximum speeds, monthly prices, activation charges and contract terms. If you are still moving or renting short term, it can also make sense to look at flexible-term plans or temporary mobile internet while you arrange a fixed home connection.

What types of internet connection are common in Germany?

The most common home internet options to compare are fibre, DSL, cable and 5G home internet. Which one you can order depends on what is installed at your building and what each provider offers at your address. This is why internet connection in Germany should always be compared by street address first, rather than by brand name alone.

What should expats look for when choosing internet in Germany?

Expats should focus on address availability, contract length, setup costs and how quickly they need service. If you are staying temporarily, a flexible option may be more useful than a long fixed contract. If you are moving into a permanent home, compare fixed-line plans by technology and later monthly price as well as the introductory offer, because the lowest starting price is not always the best long-term fit.

How much does home internet cost in Germany?

In this comparison, published introductory monthly prices range from €19–€72.95 and later monthly prices range from €19–€89.99. Listed activation charges range from €0–€79.99. The exact price you can order depends on the provider, the technology, the specific plan and your address. Always check the provider's current offer details before choosing a plan.
